As the suspension flexes up and down, it twists the rubber in its steel shells. This is normal, and designed into the requirements for the bushing. But when the car is lifted, the suspension tries to droop, and twists the bushings to the limit. If you installed your coilovers, you noticed that you had to pull the suspension down to get the stock shocks out. That is because the bushings are so twisted that they are preventing the suspension from drooping any further. For short periods, this is no problem, as this is again considered in the design of the system. But if the suspension is left drooped for long periods, it can overly stress the bushing and cause it to fail prematurely. This is why, as Jmartz mentioned, the control arms are tightened while the vehicle is on the ground, so they are neutrally loaded in the "normal" position.
